Acura’s Rise to the Top
When Acura first released the RDX car shoppers were impressed and sales sky-rocketed. The only competition for a luxury mid-size crossover SUV at the time was the BMW X3. Even when Audi and Lexus came out with their new SUVs, Acura’s sales were at an all-time high.
However, in 2015, Acura received a bad review from Car & Driver saying the car’s small pixilated information screen had become outdated. Moreover, Road & Track said the whole infotainment system was confusing and annoying to use. They were further criticized for the boring grill on their TLX and overall unimpressive design.
Acura heard the message and took some surprising steps to remedy these complaints. Honda developed Wave Studio intended to “make some waves”. The lead designers spent the next 6 years in Japan working on the Acura FSX and RL. Acura also came out with the brand new NSX, the first sportscar designed by a female, Michelle Christensen.
The design team continues working on infusing more emotion into their designs. The 6-figure NSX did just that, but now Acura needed a 5-figure car that customers could realistically drive home in. The Acura Precision Concept was born, also designed by Christensen. Critics called it “bold” and a step in the right direction for the brand. The Precision also fixed the grill issues by developing the diamond pentagon grill we have known to love in Acuras.
This was an important and highly successful move for Acura. They went on to redesign the RDX.
