All-wheel drive is optional, but all models come with the same eight-speed automatic transmission. The high-performance M235i model makes a stout 301 horsepower, but its ride is stiff-legged and may not appeal to all drivers. Handling is playful, but the 2-series Gran Coupe’s front-wheel-drive platform doesn’t impart the same litheness of BMW’s larger, rear-wheel-drive-based sedans.
