Driving Experience With a Convertible vs. Coupe
Most people imagine sports cars as coupes, but the 8 convertible will change your mind. First off, it’s worth noting that putting the top down takes a quiet 14 seconds and can be safely accomplished going up to 31 MPH. More importantly, though, an M vehicle allows you to toggle between Road, Sport, and Track with the intention of putting control back in the diver’s hands.
The carbon-ceramic setup brakes are sensitive- until you get used to them. The Steptronic transmission hugs curves as you make sharp turns with no body roll. The steel mounts in the rear suspension add stiffness for a sportier ride. This allows you to drive in comfort or sport+ mode comfortably.
Compared to the coupe, the M8 convertible is only 2% less stiff. If you like to think of sportscars as coupes, the M8 convertible has a warm welded pipe around the windshield and a torsion ring in the rear making the car more rigid. This allows the convertible to not have to stiffen the suspension for better handling.
All in all, BMW did its job with the new M8 convertible to ensure it still has the driving experience of a sports car while combining it with “hair down top-down fun”.
