      Who Owns GMC?

GMC is owned by General Motors. General Motors also owns Buick, Cadillac, and Chevrolet. GMC started off when Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was founded in 1902. In 1909, William Durant bought the company and made it a subsidiary of his company GM. In 1912, it was given the name GMC.

      Where is GMC Made?

Most GMC vehicles are made in the United States with the exception of GMC Terrain, which is produced in Ontario, Canada. The GMC Sierra pickup trucks are made in Roanoke, Indiana. The Yukon and Yukon XL are made in Arlington, Texas. The Acadia crossover is made in Delta Township, Michigan. The Canyon pickup trucks are made in Shreveport, Louisiana. Savana vans are made in Wentzville, Missouri.

      What is the GMC Logo?

The GMC logo is equally powerful and recognizable. The bold and red GMC lettering is easy to spot these days, but it was not always the bold red we know today. The first GMC logo was orange, black, and white. The M in GMC was wide and looked as if it was carrying the other letters. The letters were in a black circle inside an orange circle that read “General Motors Truck”.

The initial logo was deemed to be too sophisticated for a truck brand so GMC came up with the current red and bold design. The red color represents the power of the trucks it builds. The new logo is not elegant or sophisticated, instead, it represents the utility its consumers look for in a GMC truck.

      What is GMC’s History?

GMC was founded under the name Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1909, William Durant acquired Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and made it a subsidiary of General Motors. The year before he also acquired another company called Reliance Motor Car Company. In 1911, he combined Rapid and Reliance into one company named General Motors Company.

In 1925, GM bought Yellow Coach, a taxi and bus manufacturing company, and renamed it Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company (YT&CMC). All GM truck manufacturing was placed under YT&CMC. In 1943 it was renamed GMC Truck and Coach Division.

In 1981, GMC Truck and Coach Division became part of GM Worldwide Truck & Bus Group. However, in 1987 bus production stopped and the division became GMC Truck Division.

In 1986 GMC Truck merged with Pontiac Motor Division to give the brand the combined image of trucks with physical power and outdoor activity. In 1998 GMC Truck division rebranded itself as just GMC. This allowed the newly merged single dealer to provide both trucks and mid-level cars.

In 2002, GMC celebrated its 100 year anniversary.

In 2007, GMC introduced the Arcadia, which was the first crossover SUV.

In 2009, GMC ended the production of medium-duty commercial trucks and introduced the Terrain, a mid-size crossover SUV.

Today, GMC makes SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, and light-duty trucks. If you are interested in leasing a GMC vehicle don’t hesitate to contact us at 718-871- CARS.
